To be fair, the name is pretty self-explanatory.  As a web content writer, you…  well… write content for websites.  Depending on the site owner or consultant that you work for, this might take the form of blog posts, ebooks, reports, manifestos, white papers, email newsletters, sales copy, product descriptions and more.  Really, wherever you see words online, you’re seeing an opportunity for work as a paid web content writer.
StackEdit is a great tool for converting text into .html or copying it from WordPress, Google Docs or Word without the formatting changing. It is an in-browser markdown editor created especially for web writers. This tool has many themes, layouts and shortcut combinations to customize your content writing. It has a spell-checker that supports many languages, and you can sync it with Dropbox and Google Drive. StackEdit also allows posting articles on WordPress, Dropbox, Tumblr and Blogger in a markdown format, .html, or with adjusted formatting using the underscore template engine. If your Internet connection isn’t stable, fear not – this editor has offline functionality.

Email lists are marketer's most treasured assets -- and they're a smart way to drive traffic, conversions, and re-conversions on your content. Invest in growing your blog email subscription list for an incredibly valuable distribution arm alongside your sales lists. You can do this, for example, via lead flows that politely ask readers if they'd like to subscribe as they're reading through certain articles on your website.

Predictably, blog posts are typically written by the bloggers. However, if your team is large enough to have someone dedicated to creating gated assets and premium content -- things like ebooks and tools -- they should also write blog posts to help promote those assets. SEO specialists will also work closely with bloggers, as blog posts are often a company's best opportunity to improve organic search rankings. As such, bloggers should be writing posts that help improve the site's SEO, and drive organic traffic and leads. Their editorial should be informed by keyword research, and optimized for SEO.
Ideally, you’ll have somebody to edit your writing. If you’re responsible for writing and editing your web content, don’t do both in the same day. When the writing is still fresh, your mind will automatically make up the gaps in your copy and your editing will be subpar. Instead, put it away and come back to it another day — or at least several hours later.

When the plumbing service company enters into an agreement with the water companies the plumber may be required to upgrade their plumbing system to include additional pipe components such as pressure washers, drainage, and small kitchen sinks. It is not uncommon for a plumber to also install faucets to allow the homeowner to “tap in” to their own private supply.
Content creators should use bold text sparingly to emphasize particularly important words and phrases. If overused, it loses its effect, and the user will stop paying attention to your bolding as they scan the page. Perhaps elaborating on when and how to use bolding would be helpful. I would extend the same argument for highlighted text. And in this case, depending on how you use it and why, it may be exclusionary to your users who are colour blind if the colour is meant to convey meaning.
It’s also possible that lots of people are finding your page … only to learn it’s not what they thought it was. Remember the example about how many different kinds of football exist in the world? If someone is searching for a word that means multiple things, it’s important that your content makes it clear exactly what the page is about. Yoast created an excellent guide that explains how search intent works.
She took time to understand our unique context and tailored the training specifically to our needs. She backed up all her advice with insights gained from her experience and connections with thought leaders in SEO and keyword research. She also paired the SEO information with up-to-date research on how people interact with websites and online content.

In order to come up with good terms, you really have to get inside the heads of your audience. How are they most likely to find you? What would they search for on Google? At the end of your keyword research, you should have a list of all the relevant search terms people might use. Also, think of combinations and variations of these terms. There are a few tools that can make keyword research easier. Read our post about keyword research tools and the post about how to choose your perfect focus keyword for more practical tips.
The very first step of SEO copywriting has little to do with writing. First, you need to decide what you’re going to write about. Which topics do you want to be found for? You’ll need to use the keywords you want to rank for in your copy, so the first step of SEO copywriting is keyword research. Keyword research is what you do in order to list the keywords and keyphrases which you want to rank for.
To make sure your website is the best in your sector, the text on your websites should be nice and easy to read. Without making any concessions to the quality of your content, you should tweak and fine-tune your text to the specific demands of search engines. The process of SEO copywriting is very much like the process of writing anything else, so it’s hard work and inevitably some of us have more writing talent than others. Unfortunately, we can’t all be Ernest Hemingway, but with a little training, anyone should be able to write better SEO copy.
This was an excellent post. A large number of digital marketers will benefit from it as important aspects of content creation has been discussed in details. I especially like your points where you state that “expect visitors to come from anywhere” and advise readers to create content of less complexity and greater readability. This article can be an efficient checklist for proofreading.
While it's true Google can do a lot of the distribution work for you, it hinges on making smart decisions with your content strategy. In other words, Google might distribute the content you create, but it might distribute it onto page 32. Your job is to make sure as much content as possible appears as high up on page one as possible. This means your writers should be working closely with your SEO specialist to determine what keywords to go after -- ideally a combination of long tail terms and head terms, at an appropriate level of competitiveness given your domain authority and how aggressively you can go after the terms. Of course, that content should also be optimized for on-page SEO to improve its chances of ranking highly.
At HubSpot, we use ... well, we use HubSpot at HubSpot. It comes with a Content Management System (CMS), which allows you to create and publish content quickly in a format that's web-friendly. Whether you use HubSpot or another CMS, you need some CMS so your content marketing team can easily set up a blog, add blog posts, and add website pages without having to get help from IT or developers.
Tip #4 – The best copywriting courses out there will probably cost you a thousand bucks or more. I’m looking to purchase Gary Bencivenga’s program next. It’s a DVD home study course that costs $5,000. Does that sound like a lot? One project for me is worth between $15,000 and 25,000. If I learn one thing from that course that improves my copy enough to get more projects like that, then the $5,000 was a bargain.

Read Joe Pulizzi's excellent book Epic Content Marketing. I started reading it after I wrote this post and it confirmed and expanded what I already knew about content marketing, with much more detail than I could ever go into here. Something Pulizzi emphasizes which I originally left out was the importance of focusing on producing mobile-friendly content, since smartphones are becoming the dominant way in which most of our customers access content. Also read Michael Hyatt's Platform, mentioned above. Frequent websites like those of Content Marketing Institute, Ragan, Copyblogger, Michael Hyatt, and Gary Vaynerchuk and sign up for their email newsletters. It won't take you long to become not just familiar with content marketing, but an expert.

Quality content is web content that’s created specifically to meet your business goals. You will often need several different types of content to meet different needs and address different customer personas. One of the key ways to create high-quality content is to use search engine optimization (SEO) as you draft the content. This includes having a keyword strategy, and including keyword phrases in headlines and titles, meta descriptions, copy and more. Outstanding website content also includes relevant, high-quality images.
Get familiar with the content writer pay scale. Many content writers starting out in their careers are not sure how much they should be paid per word. Most publications pay by word, or by hour, with a certain word count expectation. On average, content writers should be paid no less than $0.02 per a word, but may not reach more than $1 a word. Salaried positions are different, as you will be paid a yearly rate for a certain amount of work. It can be difficult to get a salaried position fresh out of graduation or when you're just starting out. Most content writers will start out working per word, or per hour.[12]
Name recognition is important. Social media puts everything you need within your grasp. Build your audience, meet publishers and talk to industry experts. When your writing is published, the fun has only just begun. The more active you are on social media, the more likely your followers will be to recommend your content. Successful content writers are active, public and friendly.
Thank you for the post and for shedding light upon these two terms. I’m a beginner and have been thinking about putting my writing skills to use. What got me thinking about it was that I actually got quite close to being hired as a content writer but in the end wasn’t chosen because they decided to go for somebody experienced who already knew everything about writing online content. Only when I started doing research did I realize how complex it is – no wonder they didn’t hire me.
Recommendation 5.) My #1 recommendation however for learning how to write great copy by TONIGHT is the Kopywriting Kourse.  This is not a book, but rather a video course.  This copywriting course will take you through the basic mindsets, methods, and formulas you need to learn kick ass sales copy…..within less than 2 hours.  You also get tons of bonus content for more advanced copywriting in different areas (like sales, eCommerce, digital products and way way more)….
I like that you explain in simple terms how to make your content perfect for your audience and engage them. My fear is being unable to accurately target customer pain points and never turn any new leads. Although, by focusing strongly on the target audience and doing content audits can help adjust content to better fit the audience. I’m SO ready to start producing effective, targeted content that will help people while gaining their interest, and I’ll definitely be using these points as a guide. Thanks so much!
How do Google (and other search engines) understand what’s on each stop? That part relies on the content of each web page, or other document or file in its index. Webmasters might link content that is related on their own sites, or link out to relevant content on other sites. This creates the necessary pathways search engine bots need to crawl through the web and understand how the web is constructed.
Add value. That’s the secret. It’s not really a secret at all. We've already talked about it throughout this piece. Although when you look at some of the marketing companies engage in you wonder if they’re purposely avoiding the obvious. We skip advertising when it provides little to no value. If you want to learn about advertising that doesn’t get skipped, find a skateboarder and ask him if you can watch him look through a skateboard magazine. You’ll see that he spends as much time looking at the ads as he does looking at the articles and photos. Or check out The Berrics website. Much of the content is advertisements, but skaters don’t skip these videos, they watch them just like they watch the other videos, because they’re getting the value they want--good skating. As a skater I’d like to say skateboard companies pioneered content marketing decades ago, but I know they were only doing what came naturally, and selling more product was secondary to the fun of creating videos and magazines. If you want to hire someone onto your marketing team who understands content marketing intuitively, hiring a skateboarder might not be a bad step.
At my own company we’ve used content marketing to grow more than 1,000% over the past year. Potential clients find our content, find value in it, and by the time they contact us they’re already convinced they want to work with us. We don’t have to engage in any high pressure sales tactics, it’s merely a matter of working out details, signing an agreement, and getting started. The trust that usually needs to be built up during an extensive sales cycle has already been created before we know the potential client exists.
